the greatest distance lies.

For the distance

between rockets and the buttons that fire them.

Between where we find ourselves

and the nearest shelter.

Between attacks and responses,

responses and revenge.

.

Our narrative and theirs.

.

For the distance

Between Alon Shvut and Halhul.

Between Yerushalayim and Al-Quds,

Tel Aviv and Yafo.

Between the West Bank and Judea and Samaria.

.

For the distance

between a meter or two in Jerusalem.

.

For the distance

between neighbors

who never meet

but who are still technically neighbors.

For the distance between

how they remember

how things were

before they changed.

.

For the distance

between civilians and soldiers,

soldiers and armed militants,

armed militants and terrorists.

.

For the distance

between collateral damage and children.

.

Between pro and anti,

anti-Israel and anti-Semitic,

Palestinians and Hamas,

between having hate in your heart and having anger in your heart.

.

For the distance

between being silent and being a sympathizer.

.

For the great distance

between yesterday and tomorrow.

Between ‘what could have been’ and ‘what is.’

.

For the distance

between ‘this’ being wrong and ‘this’ being apartheid

wrong and colonialism –

the Holocaust.

.

For the distance

between the right ‘to be’ and the right to return.

.

For the distance

What we are taught and what is.

What we are taught and what isn’t.

Between history and our history books.

For the distance

Between what was and what isn’t anymore.

Between where we are going and where we will end up

& how the hell we ever ended up here.
